Why this exists: LLMs cannot check backlinks

Ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini "who links to stripe.com" and they guess — answers come from parametric memory, not a live link index. We ran the same backlink question through three LLMs and none could look it up: Can LLMs check backlinks?

BacklinkMCP fixes that with a tool call. Your agent queries a proprietary web-scale link index with editorial-authority scoring (weighted toward high-trust wiki/edu/gov/news referrers — resistant to link-farm inflation) and gets real numbers back in JSON.

Built for: agent-side SEO signal — authority checks, competitor link-profile skims, backlink-gap and disavow audits, expired-domain evaluation. Index tools are domain-level (referring domains + authority — not per-link URLs or anchor text). For continuous day-to-day link-velocity monitoring, a dedicated crawler like Ahrefs is still the better fit.

FAQ

Is there a free backlink checker API without signup? Yes — 10 lookups/day per IP over REST or MCP, no account needed. Browser version: free backlink checker.

Does Ahrefs have an MCP server? Yes, on paid Ahrefs plans. BacklinkMCP's remote MCP has a free tier and needs no Ahrefs subscription: Ahrefs MCP alternative.

Can ChatGPT or Claude check backlinks on their own? No — they answer from training data and guess. They need a live tool. Test writeup: can LLMs check backlinks?

Is this a full Ahrefs alternative? For agent-side domain-level signal (authority, referring domains, gap, toxic review), yes: Ahrefs alternative. It does not return per-link URLs, anchor text, or rel/dofollow state, and it is not a continuous crawler.

What does "domain-level" mean? The index answers "which domains link to X and how strong are they" — not "which exact page links to which exact page." Every response carries a machine-readable granularity block so agents can't misread rows as per-link URLs.

Does flag_toxic_links prove a domain is toxic? No. It is a heuristic review queue over the low-authority tail of a link profile — disavow candidates for a human to review, never an automatic disavow instruction. Explainer: what is a toxic backlink?
