Questions

Do I need an account?
No. You prove control by publishing a token somewhere only you can write — a file in your repository, a file on your website, or a DNS TXT record. That proves the same thing a login would, and it works for hosted servers that have no repository.
What does claiming change?
The entry is marked Verified, its outbound link becomes dofollow, and you can correct its metadata. It does not change the score: that is computed from observable properties of the project and claiming is only one of its criteria.
Can I claim a server I did not write?
Only if you control its repository or its domain, which is exactly what the check tests. If you maintain a fork, claim the fork's own entry rather than the original's.
Can I remove the proof afterwards?
Yes. We check once. Delete the file or the DNS record whenever you like.
